Question

Does the NCSC's AI warning affect a small business?

Indirectly, and in practice yes. The forecast is about critical infrastructure, but the same weaknesses and the same fixes apply to smaller organisations.

Short answer

The advice is not size-limited

The NCSC wants resilience scaled to organisational size, complexity and risk, which means every organisation has something proportionate to do [5]. Dr Horne said AI's impact "will be felt by us all, whether you and your organization choose to harness it or not" [6].

Why it matters to you

Three routes

You may supply a larger organisation

The NCSC asks for updates to be deployed across supply chains [3]. A larger customer may soon ask about your controls.

You use the same routes in

Phishing, valid accounts, exposed applications and remote services were behind 88% of incidents at large organisations [7], and smaller organisations rely on the same technologies.

Help is aimed at you

A 75% discount on a first Cyber Essentials certificate was announced for micro, small and medium-sized businesses [5]. The Cyber Resilience Pledge, reported by Infosecurity Magazine, lets signatories refer supply chain SMEs for free Cyber Essentials certification [6].

A caution

Do not over-read the forecast

The sources we read do not say small businesses are the target of the 2028 forecast. They say the NCSC wants proportionate action everywhere [5]. The sensible reading is to do the basics now, and to keep an eye on whether customers start asking for evidence.

Where to begin

Start with Cyber Essentials and the four access routes. Neither needs a large team.
